Extra Credit

Extra Credit can fix an undesirable grade. I provide ample of opportunities for extra credit in class and at home.  Completed reading fluencies with answered comprehension questions are counted toward English extra credit, so are the bonus words on spelling tests. For math, students are able to take home the problem set and complete it along with their homework, I will give extra credit for it being complete and correct. Going above and beyond is always extra credit, I have some students turn in book reports completely on their own, I will always give extra credit for things of that nature. Every week I write a bonus for the children under their spelling words that are posted at the front of the classroom, as well. Please encourage them to take advantage of these opportunities.

Z.A.P

The use of grade floors are prohibited. All students must receive and keep the original grade they have earned. If a student turns an assignment in late, incomplete, or does not turn in the assignment at all, the student will get the grade that is earned, even if it is a zero. The only exception to this is if they attend Z.A.P. (Zeros are Not Permitted) with Mrs. McNary, to make up work they have missed or would like to redo to make a better grade.

Curriculum and Instruction

The Reading curriculum is Journey’s by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Your child will have two reading books this year.  The spelling list is composed of words from the reading series.  Math curriculum is Eureka Math, and your child has workbook, notebook, and folder that is to stay at school. Please make sure these stay at school because we do not have any extras if your child misplaces them. We are using Studies Weekly for Social Studies, which is mainly online.  Science and grammar will be incorporated into the reading ELA.

Each weekend, most likely Sunday, I will update our weekly skills on this class website and the weekly newsletter.

Conduct & Richland’s Fabulous Four

Good citizenship and behavior are greatly encouraged to ensure the best learning environment for every child.

The Fabulous Four of Richland are:

              Act safely

        Be responsible and respectful

Care for yourself, others, and the environment

Do your best at all times

Conferences/Phone Calls

SCS has scheduled parent teacher conferences for September 17th and February 15th. I will send home a letter asking you to come in for one of these conferences.  If you feel we need a conference at any other time during the year, please send me a note or email me at  vadelkd@scsk12.org or visionaries.vadel@gmail.com.

Absents / Tardies

If your child should need to be absent due to illness, please send a written note to me the day he/she returns or the absence will be unexcused. If your child is out for more than two days, please pick up their work for the day so they do not get too far behind. If your child accumulates 5 unexcused absences or tardies, you will need to come to school for a conference.  Taking your child out of school early, before 3:15 P.M., is considered an unexcused tardy.  Also, please do your best to have your child at school in time to be in the classroom no later than 8:15 A.M.

Accelerated Reader

We will spend time each day doing sustained silent reading.  Each student will be tested using the Star Reading Program to find the ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development) for his/her reading level. Students will be expected to read and take tests on trade books within his/her ZPD.  After the first 9- weeks, a goal will be set for each child.  You will receive a printout twice a month listing your child’s reading and test record. I will send home your child's reading level and you can check out books at the public library to read at home.  You can check the level of any book on the AR Test section of the Richland Web Site.

Uniform - Dress Code

At Richland the uniform consists of a red, white, or gray top and khaki, navy,  or  black bottoms. Sweaters or indoor jackets must be solid uniform colors. No logos should be visible. Shorts or skirts should touch the knee. Shoes cannot be crocs or have wheels. *Please consider sending a jacket to school with your child, it is frigid in our classroom and I do not have control of the temperature in our classroom, the Board of Education does. It is hard for your child to do their work and concentrate when they are trying to warm themselves by putting their arms in legs in their shirts.

Lunch

Breakfast and lunch are free for every student. Breakfast is from 7:45 - 8:15 am. Lunch is from 11:15 - 11:45 am.

Birthdays

We can not celebrate birthdays at Richland this year.  You can and are encouraged to eat lunch with your child on his/her special day. Feel free to bring him/her a special treat, but please do not bring food items, treats or toys for any other students in the class. Also, I cannot allow your child to pass out party invitations in class unless everyone is invited.  Your child can pass the invitations out before or after school.

Parties

We will have two parties this school year.  We will have a holiday party in December and an end of school party on the last day of school. Please do not send snacks or treats for the class at any other time than these two times. Also, snacks or treats for parties must come from the Healthy Foods List on the Richland website.

Field Trips

We are planning to go on at least two field trips this year.  I will post them as soon as I find out.

PTO

All parents are encouraged to join and participate in the PTO. ($5.00)

Our school does not receive Federal Title I Funds, so the only way we can get computers and classroom supplies is through the PTO fundraisers.

Volunteer Forms

If you plan to come to the classroom at any time during the year to help with parties or programs or to go on field trips, SCS requires that you must have complete the online background check and have a volunteer form on file in the office.
